Do I Keep It? Gifts From Loved Ones
It's a challenge we all encounter, and multiple times throughout our lives. We are given a gift by a loved one, and we don't like and need it. We know the giver took time and effort to choose something they thought we would love, and we appreciate that. We may also face the challenge of how to answer them if they ask how we like it (or worse, why we aren't wearing it/don't display it/don't use it).
What I want to address now are the gifts given years ago,
that are stored in the back of closets and drawers, but you still can't let go
of.
How to Decide What To Keep
You love the giver, but not the gift. Seeing the gift
reminds you of them, and their love, yet the gift itself adds nothing to your
life. In fact, you may feel guilty because you don't display or use it. Hating
the gift does not mean you hate the giver.
Letting go of the gift does not mean you will forget the
person and their thoughtfulness. You can always take a photo of the gift and
write a note as recording who gave it to you and why. Nor does it mean that you
don't love the person and appreciate the effort that went into purchasing it
for you.
Letting go does not mean you no longer love the person. It
does mean that you honor your space now and keep what you love and use.
By letting go of it you put it out into the world where
someone who will enjoy and appreciate it can have it. This may be a family
member who would enjoy it and appreciate the history behind it.
It Is Not Easy

Declutter Tip: Identify What You Love
What Items Make You Smile
Items that make you smile when you see them, remind you of people or events you cherish, and put in a better mood should not be hidden away. They need to be visible so they can be enjoyed. Even if it needs to be stored in a box to protect it, make sure the box is accessible so you take a peek at it from time to time.
Identify What You Enjoy Having Around
Once you identify what you love to have around, ask yourself the following questions:
If you already display and enjoy it, good for you! If it is not displayed, why not? What do you have out that you don't love? Consider getting rid of that so you can make room for something you do.
And as an added challenge, if you don't love something, why not remove it permanently? You can give away, donate, or sell; the result is you make space to enjoy the things that you love.
I'm doing this challenge myself. The photo shows some of the costume jewelry that was my grandmother's. While I have worn the pieces on occasion, they are stored away in boxes and I forget I have them. I want to find a way to safely store them and also put them in a place I look at often. This way I'll be able to visually enjoy them, and maybe I'll even find an occasion to wear them.

Declutter Tip: Keep What Makes You Happy
Successfully decluttering means you have to make some hard decisions Should I keep it or let it go? One thing to ask yourself is if the item makes you happy.
What We Kept
What he spent the most time looking at and talking about was a plastic bag filled with marbles.
Marbles in all colors and different sizes. Marbles he had won and traded for. Marbles he had played with, collected and saved. The joy on his face and in his voice brought me much happiness as well.
Later, he took each marble from the bag and carefully cleaned them. There was no question that these should be displayed where we could see them regularly, a visual reminder of the happy memories.
We didn't have anything that would display them properly, so I purchased the jar you see in the photo. Placed on a shelf near a window, they always make me smile when I look at them.
What Would Make You Happy To Keep?
Let go of what no longer lights you up and make space for that which does.
What do you have on display that brightens your day? What is waiting in the back of a cabinet or closet that you could bring out into the light?
*Note: some items you choose to keep may be harmed by being out in light and air. Please use caution in choosing which items you display and where you display them.

Where Do I Begin? 6 Tips to Start Decluttering
If you are facing a whole-house declutter, it can be overwhelming. The advice to “just pick something and start” is not bad, and it is better than nothing.
Where Do You Begin?
- Do not begin with anything sentimental. These are the hardest items to choose to release, and you need to save them for later, after your declutter “muscles” are better developed.
- Do not begin with any area that has an overwhelming amount of items in it. If you have 300 pair of shoes, that is not the best place to start. If your closet is packed, or your bookshelves are groaning with books, that may be too much to start with. Pick a smaller area.
- Do not try to tackle a large space. Instead, break it down. If you decide to begin with your kitchen, consider choosing one cabinet or your pantry for your first declutter session. Then plan a time to do another section.
- Don't wait until everything is “perfect” to begin. Yes, you'll need trash bags and boxes to sort out the trash and get rid of items, but don't think you have to have the perfect storage solution in place for the remaining items. Work with what you have to get started. You WILL find excuses not to begin, so pick a day and a time, write it on your calendar and begin.
- If you have a partner, do not begin with areas that are used by both of you, especially if they are resistant to decluttering. Pick and area that is yours.
- Add in things that make you happy: music that energizes you, a favorite beverage to sip on, a small snack to keep you going. Make the experience more pleasant so you don't dread getting started.
